Yes. It’s Damon Albarn. From Blur and Gorillaz.
This was meant to be a quick 10 minute job for the BBC which ended up with me sitting with 5 other people while Damon played a 4 song private set to use on Elton John’s piano. It’s truly the definition of a great dinner party story.
If you’ve ever worked with Damon you’ll know it’s like working with someone who’s always bored of what you just said and wants to move onto the the next thing.
I was tasked with taking his picture with BBC DJ Jo Whiley. The only way he would stop talking was if he was busy. So I sat him at the piano which used to live on the top floor of Wogan House. This gave him something to do with his hands, which meant his brain was free to turn and look at me. I got 3 frames of him looking at camera. That’s it. But then something lovely happened. He kept playing, I mean he really kept playing. To the dismay of the producers who were pulled between staying on schedule and letting musical genius run free, he sat at the Elton’s piano and played 4 songs to an audience of no more than 6 people. It was special and no one can take it away from me.
Thanks for all the music Damon. But mostly for looking at the camera for 5 seconds.
