Jessica. Shot at the same time as Hollie - the shoot where I saved the day for a client - this was a totally spur of the moment job. Having never really shot much beauty I did what any photographer should and went for the most overused set up. Simple clamshell lighting, but with no real studio to shoot in, I used my 2x3 soft box behind her to give me a clean background. It also had the benefit of wrapping light around her from behind, a technique I’ve seen done better but was decent enough here for a last minute shoot. Aside from that it was simple a beauty dish from in front and above angled down, with a reflector to fill in.
The main takeaway from this job was just how sharp my camera was when you gave it enough light. I wouldn’t usually shoot anything like this, but here there was no trace of camera shake. Every eyelash stood proudly, the catchlights in her eyes gave her life. It makes sense when you think about it, but I’d never played with this much light in a small space before. It was a revelation. Cameras just capture light, give them enough and even the cheapest camera will shine.
Jessica herself was nice - we didn’t get to talk much as she spent most of her time getting ready, but she was fun and made what could have been a stressful shoot a nice experience. We had some hard flash fun at the end which to me show her in a slightly more real light.
