Doctor Who is one of those shows that transcends generations. A bit like Star Trek it attracts fans who will, and do base their identities around it.
My first run in with a Timelord was brief but full of fun. Ncuti fresh off of staring in mega marketing stunt, and movie, Barbie was thrust right into the limelight as the newest Doctor. He was hot property this week. The face of every billboard, app or paper you might come across, so I felt pretty good that I had a few minutes one on one with him.
I only had time to shoot him in the greenroom so I did the best I could and sat him infront of the velvet curtains. The ones that are an awkward shade of blue. Sitting him down we joked about his life and how he never has time to just sit and chat like this. Still, he seemed a little tense. My assistant held the trusty Profoto Clic Octa over his head to and we snapped away for 60 seconds. He was good but I wasn’t happy. So after the show I asked his agent if I could have another go. They didn’t really want to say yes, but I knew that they always spent a few minutes saying goodbye to the producers, so I knew I’d have a minute in there.
So round 2, same set up. We joked it was nice to see each other again so soon. This time the tension was gone. What I had seen earlier was likely someone about to go on the UKs most popular radio stations at prime time.
What this taught me is that even people used to being around cameras and pressure, can still wear it on their face. Plus, it never hurts to go again if you’re not happy with a shot.
