This was my first time in the Cannes Photo Call section. I had some accreditation - but not quite enough. Luckily this was the very first call so it seems like they were getting into gear as no one asked to see my pass. So I decided to stick around and see what a photo call was like.
They’re loud.
As the worlds press fight to get the best version of the same picture - the talent stand there and smile at all of them turn. It’s a bit of a weird dance they do but it gets results and I assume the talent are forced to turn out. With this being my first one, it was interested to see how the pit of photographers handled Robert DeNiro. Some photographers (and those who do the job know who I mean) are pretty rude ins their pursuit of the image. Shouting, being visibility annoyed if the talent don’t look right at them. Even down to throwing a tantrum if the talent does something “fun” like a wave to one side and not the other. With Bob they were all generally a bit more quiet and respectful as I was about to find out, who compared to lesser known people.
I wasn’t really shooting this but seeing as I hadn’t been thrown out I decided to pop off a few frames. You can tell I’m way off to the side, so I wasn’t getting great stuff, but hey - it’s still Robert De Niro.
