Rosie Holt is funny. Really funny. Her comedy act centered around being a condescending Tory MP who just can’t help but say the wrong thing. It’s a hilariously sad-but-true take on British politics in the modern day.

Getting to spend time with her as her actual self was a pleasure. We sat backstage before she went up and she was generous with her time and takes on life. Before she went up I double checked that she was ok with me photographing the show, she nodded and smiled. Almost a knowing smile, I should have seen it coming.

As I mentioned, her act centres around being a bumbling political figure. Imagine Boris Johnson or George Bush doing an hour long monologue. She at various points she would interrupt herself to call me out and make big deal about a photographer following her around to huge laughs from the crowd of around 700 people. Every time she would act annoyed but pose in a position so that I could capture her perfectly.

It was actually a very cool experience to be “part” of a comedy act. I bet some people thought that we had planned this, but it was all her. I could see every time she paused to look at me and bring her into the audience’s attention, that flicker of the real her laughing away. I like to think I gave her another thing to add to her show for that night.

When we got backstage we had a laugh together and I asked her for a portrait in the style of her character. We sat infant of a mirror and she overdid her makeup while we laughed about the whole experience.

Thanks Rosie, you’re a good one.
